Google Glass
In April 2013, Google began selling a device that looked like it had arrived from a decade in the future: a pair of glasses with a small computer built into the frame, a display floating just above your line of sight, a camera that could photograph or record whatever you were looking at, hands-free. Google Glass wasn't a concept video. It was real, it worked, and early "Explorers" who paid $1,500 for the privilege genuinely believed they were wearing the future of computing.
The engineering was extraordinary. The product-market fit wasn't there.
Ordinary people struggled to answer a simple question: what problem does this solve for me? Glass could check email, take photos, give directions — all things a phone already did, just slightly more awkwardly on your face. And the camera built into everyday glasses created a problem nobody had solved: the people around an Explorer had no way of knowing if they were being recorded. A new word entered the culture almost overnight — "Glasshole" — and restaurants, bars, and theaters began posting signs banning the device outright.
By January 2015, Google quietly discontinued the consumer Explorer program. The technology wasn't wrong, and versions of it later found real traction in industrial and manufacturing settings, where hands-free access to information solves an obvious, specific problem. But as a mass consumer product, Glass had solved a problem nobody was asking to have solved, using a form factor that made strangers uncomfortable in the process.
Being early and being right are not the same thing. Glass proved you can build something genuinely impressive and still fail, if the people you built it for never had the problem you assumed they had.
